An Indonesian gentleman, Iyus, is set to become Japan’s foreign tour bus driver after passing Japan’s Specified Skilled Worker Program. He will start his work in April 2025, driving for a company in Tokyo.

Iyus’s success in working for Japan’s transportation industry is largely due to changes in the country’s immigration policies. Last year, the Japanese government revised immigration laws to increase the number of foreign workers. This change also impacted the transportation sector, which includes taxis and buses.

The transportation sector was included in the Specified Skilled Worker No.1 category. The first qualification exam for this category was held in December 2024. Iyus was the only participant who passed the bus driver category.

Speaking to the media at the Ryobi Group headquarters in Okayama, Iyus expressed his excitement. “It is like a dream come true that I can become a professional driver. I want to drive safely to provide a comfortable service to our customers,” he said.

Shinji Ogami, head of the Bus and Railway Unit at Ryobi Group, hopes that Iyus’ presence will improve the transportation services for foreign tourists in Japan.

“Iyus will provide a service that meets the needs of international tourists as Japan sees a surge in the number of overseas visitors,” said Ogami.
