In 2013, when I was still in high school, I watched Pet Girl of Sakurasou, an anime about high-spirited high school students who want to chase their dreams in the anime-game industry. Eight years later, I’m now watching Remake Our Life, which kinda reminds me of Sakurasou with its “dream of working in the anime-game industry” story, but it really hits differently with my current condition now. The main character has been a failure as an adult and really regrets his not making the choice of college he wanted. Because of that, he did not do most of his job very well, and ended up unemployed for the most of his time, screaming with “ah, if I could go back to that time.”

Then, when he did go back to his past, he was really determined to do things as he really desired. But again, reality is not that nice, for even though he has the experience of a 28-year-old working adult and he has chosen the right college, he is surrounded by many talented colleagues who already possess firm foundations from the start, including people whom he used to see in the future: Aki Shino who would become a great illustrator, and Eiko Kawasegawa who would become Kyouya’s leader in a failed project, but seem to have great talent in movie-making. Seeing these people makes Kyouya realize that even if he could go back to the past, the way to success is still not easy.

Kyouya Hashiba is a reflection of an adult who used to have lots of big dreams, but gets faced with the grim reality that not everything can go as planned. For working adults, it is a reminder that challenges are always present wherever and whenever you are. While for youngsters who just started dreaming, it is a reminder to use their time right now carefully, so that there will be no regrets in the future. It is nice to see how things will wrap up in the next episode, while also thinking how the next episode of our life will be.

Remake our Life! is currently streaming on Ani-One Asia
