Synopsis
Five years have passed since the Great Catastrophe. The reconstruction and technical innovation it brought about offered a place for robots in the society. Robots do the jobs that humans provided without fail, and they have become indispensable to humans. But robots are not human; robots don’t have heart. In an isolated Nerima University’s Lab no.7, there are two graduate students who develop robots. Umetarou Tenma and Hiroshi Ochanomizu were developing a robot with a new kind of AI known as Bewusstein, the robot with a heart and consciousness. The A106 robot which they developed would later be known as Atom.
Comments
This is the story behind the birth of Japan’s legendary robot, Tetsuwan Atom who is also known as Astro Boy. This anime series is adapted from a comic which still keep some original concept and universe from the legendary Osamu Tezuka. Although being adapted from such an old series, the story in this anime can be easily enjoyed by those who don’t know much about Astro Boy. In this first episode, this anime cleary tells one of the big theme in Astro Boy, something about robots and heart. One of the most interesting part from this anime is how the audience can see the stories about Ochanomizu and Tenma during their college years, two losers and tech-geeks who are trying to develope their dream robot.
This anime has a good quality visuals. There are some nostalgic sense from the character designs which look like Osamu Tezuka’s character style combined with the current anime style. The opening sequence with After the Rain’s song has a very good animation sequence with some beautiful pastel color in it.
Atom the Beginning is one of the must-watch anime in this season for Osamu Tezuka fans, sci-fi fans, or for you who look for some robot anime which is different than the usual.
