Synopsis

Asta and Yuno were abandoned together at the same church and have been inseparable since. As children, they promised that they would compete against each other to see who would become the next Emperor Magus. However, as they grew up, some differences between them became apparent. Yuno is a genius with magic, with amazing power and control, while Asta could not use magic at all, and tried to make up for his lack by training physically. When they received their Grimoires at age 15, Yuno got a spectacular book with a four-leaf clover (most people receive a three-leaf-clover), while Asta received nothing at all. However, when Yuno was threatened, the truth about Asta’s power was revealed, he received a five-leaf clover Grimoire, a “black clover”! Now the two friends are heading out in the world, both seeking the same goal!

The pilot episode has given a fairly clear picture of the main characters, Asta and Yuno, and their motives. The two orphans with opposite natures have the same goal of becoming mahou tei/emperor of magic. It’s the familiar premise that often appears in the shounen genre, such as want to become a hokage or pirate king, but presented with different settings.

As per the title “Asta and Juno”, this first episode emphasizes the rivalry between the two of them, who have starkly contrasting perspectives and attitudes. Asta is noisy and hilarious, always becoming a laughing material because of his lack of magic, but possess physical strength and great stamina. Yuno is calm, popular and blessed with great magic talent. What distinguishes them with rival couples in other series is that they accept each other as rivals and gives mutual support.

Hearing that studio Pierot studio will work on this anime, there are concerns that the plot will deviate from the manga storyline, possibly with the addition of filler, as had happened with Tokyo Ghoul season 2 and Twin Star Exorcist. However, the animation and CG in the episode has been very good.

For those who love shounen adventure themes like in mainstram anime: Naruto, One Piece, Dragon Ball, or Fairy Tail, Black Clover can be an option for tihs Fall 2017 season.
