Yuu is a healer who has the power to calm down angry monsters. Unfortunately, he also has a phobia towards monsters. One day, he met Merc, an amnesiac girl who is trapped inside a jar. Together, they embark on a journey to recover Merc’s memory.

As the second anime simulcasted on indonesian anime streaming service Ponimu, Merc StoriA: The Apathetic Boy and the Girl in a Bottle is a fantasy anime that is reminiscent of some JRPG fantasy world like Pokémon where humans and monsters live together in harmony. The story is quite straightforward for a fantasy story. After losing his father, Yuu chose to embark on a journey along with Merc.
As the leading duo, both Yuu and Merc already establishes a strong chemistry. They really feel like close friends. Their interactions are supported by good animation and visuals that capture their facial expressions well. The downside of the first episode, however, is that there are some information which aren’t explained first in the earlier part of the episode, but suddenly become important in the latter part, like Yuu’s phobia which suddenly shown in the middle of the episode.
For a fantasy story, Merc StoriA: The Apathetic Boy and the Girl in a Bottle also feels really lighthearted. Yuu’s power is not a combat based skill but more of a support/healing type. If you are looking for a fantasy story but think that Goblin Slayer is too dark, Merc StoriA can be an alternative.
