The first season has established that the sound of the bowstring (tsuru) as it releases the arrow, the “tsurune” referred to by the title, is the key point of the main character Minato Narumiya’s attraction to kyūdō (Japanese traditional archery). The first episode continues to emphasize sounds as an important appeal of kyūdō by highlighting yagoe, a spirited yell sometimes performed by the archer while releasing the arrow. It is nice to hear the voice actor’s take on their respective character’s yell, which can be an extra point of interest for seiyū fans. Overall, the sound design is great and it would be delightful to watch the show with good-quality audio equipment and settings.

The first episode actually largely depicts sports competitions held among the classes in the main characters’ school. Thus, in addition to archery scenes, viewers also get to see Kyoto Animation staff showing their chops in depicting other sports as well, namely futsal, volleyball, basketball, and kendō. They all convey the youthful energies of the characters through their character animation.
