First written in 2009, Sword Art Online (also known as SAO), is a light novel series that tells the story of Kirito, Asuna, and their friends in a virtual reality world. The story begins when Kirito and other video game players are trapped in a virtual reality game named Sword Art Online, which sets the rule that the players who get killed in the game will also die in the real world. Kirito and thousands of other players must fight to the 100th floor of Aincrad Tower to escape from the game. The success of this novel has lead to anime adaptations, video games, comics, and several souvenirs.
