Ever since it was announced that CLAMP will be making a sequel to the Cardcaptor Sakura manga, itu seemed like a foregone conclusion that an animated adaptation would follow suit. And this season, the return of Cardcaptor Sakura on TV has been fulfilled, with director Morio Asaka returning to direct the series at Madhouse again, while Kunihiko Hamada taking over the position of character design from Kumiko Takahashi.
The first episode has set up a bit the plot of the new series to come, though none of the new characters have made a proper introduction yet. It remains to be seen how different the conflict will be compared to the previous series.
The main treat of the first episode is really in seeing how the relationships that Sakura has established in the original series continue to flourish, as expected from a shoujo manga to have strong focus on feelings and relationships. We see her connections with friends and guardians, close and far, remain strong and emotionally enriching. The shoujo feel is accentuated even more by the soft, bright colours and the use shoujo-styled background visuals to illustrate the moods of the characters. A series that seems poised to stand strong on what it has built before, and upon the traditions of shoujo manga.
