Two years after the events of Gundam Build Divers, the online game Gundam Battle Nexus Online has introduced an updated version of the game with new features and immersive “story missions.” Wandering player Hiroto and others stumble upon what a secret story mission where they are tasked with protecting a village of anthropomorphic animals. Yet there’s more to the mission to what it seems, as a message appears and asks them if they are Build Divers, the group that saved GBN two years before.

Gundam Build Divers Re:RISE doesn’t feel like your typical Gundam show. In fact, it’s something mentioned by a character in the show itself, how the in-game mission’s setting doesn’t feel like what you would see in Gundam.

And at first glance, it does feel odd. While the Gundam Build series didn’t quite fit the mold of your regular Gundam show to begin with, the previous Fighters & Divers shows have gone out of their way to keep the die-hard Gundam fan sated, whether it be through references, throwbacks, and redesigns of fan-favorite mobile suits from Gundam’s past.

Yet Re:RISE so far, feels like it’s done the opposite. The mobile suit designs are an ecclectic mix, of a super robot-ish combining mecha, a dragon-looking Super Deformed Gundam, a knight-looking Gundam, and a redesign of the bizzare-looking WaDom from Turn A Gundam. Even the main cast of characters aren’t particularly adept at fighting, a departure from the usual norm of ace pilots.

But take a closer look and you start to notice the occasional bit of interesting dialogue and character writing seeming to hint at more to the story. There’s more to Re:RISE than it seems, and while it still might not be your typical Gundam show, so was fan-favorite Mobile Fighter G Gundam. If Re:RISE’s different approach manages to take the Gundam narrative to places the typical Gundam show can’t, I get the feeling that Re:RISE will turn out to be something quite special.
