Synopsis
Aside from the worldly, physical side, there also exists the spiritual, occult side in the world around us that come from the accumulation of negative human emotions. Anger, hate, resentment, shame and other negative emotions form negative energy called Curse, which can bring disaster in the world. Yuji Itadori is a student who has extraordinary athletic and physical abilities. His efforts to save his fellow club mates bonded him with Sukuna, the strongest curse ever. Itadori’s life then changed from a student with extraordinary talent to a student from a school that trains Curse exterminators.

Jujutsu Kaisen is one of the most anticipated anime titles this season — no, make that in 2020. This series, along with Act-Age (before its sudden cancellation) and Chainsaw Man, are often referred to as the “New Generation” of the prestigious Shounen Jump magazine.
The first reaction you might get when watching Jujutsu Kaisen is noticing how the anime can flow like a film. The use of scene transitions and how exposition is provided through dialogue rather than monologue, are usually present more in anime films such as in Makoto Shinkai’s works, and they are used beautifully in this first episode. There are almost no boring parts when watching this anime, and even the world-building explanation part is carried out at the right moment and not needlessly long.
Action scenes are the main selling point of this anime, as they are so prominent in this episode. The battle scenes are made seamless and fluid, with consistent animation. The set-up and the action during the battle scenes are memorable. Even Gege Akutami’s drawing style, which relies on harsh and dynamic lines in the manga version, is translated well in this anime adaptation.
Since this episode is only the introduction to the series, there’s not much else yet that can be discussed from it. However, as an opener to the anime series, this first episode has been able to provide both exquisite animation and sufficient explanation to get into the story.
