The Popular Culture Convention Asia, or Popcon for short, a leading festival for contents related to creative industry, especially comics, toys, movies, and animations, will be held for its fifth time on Friday-Sunday, August 12-14, 2016 at Jakarta Convention Center, Senayan. This event, organized by Revata Cipta Kreasi (Kreavi), has been recognized as a place for local and international creative industry to meet and collaborate. Bringing the theme “Pop Revolution”, Popcon Asia 2016 wants to bring the spirit of pop culture revolution to all pop culture enthusiasts.
Grace Kusnadi, CEO of Revata who was also the initiator of Popcon Asia, explained the importance of holding Popcon Asia 2016 for the development of Indonesian creative industry. “The high potential of Indonesian creative industry requires a place for networking, sharing, collaborating, and improving the abillities of the creators. In this Popcon Asia 2016, knowledge for intellectual property rights becomes our focus. We hope that content creators will have more awareness on their intellectual property rights.”
Sunny Gho, CEO of Kosmik Magazine and Co-Founder of Popcon Asia also said that the presence of many creative industry players from various countries will open chances for collaboration. “Not only collaborating in making contents, but also to market it to the point of raising its commercial value. Various obstacles that we encountered make it necessary to interact with people from other countries. This will raise the commercial potential in global creative industry market. This is what we aim for, so that local content creators have more ability to compete globally.”
Collaboration between local and international creators is facilitated by inviting foreign cultural center. Some of them are the Korean Cultural Center Indonesia that will bring Street Art Collaboration Project between Artime Joe & Dhado Wacky, and also inviting Korean multitalent artist, Park Taejoon, who is a Webtoon Comic artist and a singer. Meanwhile, Institut Français d’Indonésie will bring Normaal Studio (that produces the peanut series and several winners at Annecy Festival), NewSide Studio (together with Director Chelebourg will present a demo of their virtual reality works), and Nicolas Fiinet (Angoulême Festival, who will come to Popcon Asia for the second time).
Popcon Asia 2016, cooperating with the government’s Creative Economy Board (Bekraf, Badan Ekonomi Kreatif), provide the chances for registering, socializing, and consultation of intellectual property rights for content creators. Bekraf also supports Indische Partif (local game developer) to present eight game developers that has been curated to join Popcon Asia 2016. These are in accordance with one of Popcon Asia goals, that is to encourage all people to appreciate the potentials of creative industry in Indonesia.
Kreavi as the biggest creative networks in Indonesia also prepares some funny surprises for Popcon visitors. One of them is a collaboration project with local creativepreneur, Vidi Aldiano, involving dozens of creative talents from Kreavi.com from several places in Indonesia.
Kreavi will also choose their 100 best creators to be presented in this biggest Southeast Asia pop culture festival. The event wil also host a series of talk show that invite various industry persosn, brand, agency, academics, communities, and media.
