Spring 2018 Anime: Steins;Gate 0

Synopsis

The dark untold story of Steins;Gate where the eccentric mad scientist Okabe is struggling to recover from a failed attempt at rescuing Kurisu. He decided to give up and abandon his lively scientist alter ego to forget the past. When all seems to be normal, he seems to be pulled back into the past by meeting an acquaintance of Kurisu, who told him that they have begun testing a device that stores the memory of a human and creates a simulation of them with their characteristics and personalities. Okabe began experimenting and found out that the simulation of Kurisu has brought back anguish and some new unexpected tragedies. 

Zero is a side story that explores events from the Beta Attractor Field’s future that contributed in making the end of the original story possible.

“El Psy Kongroo”. I did not expect that the iconic phrase was not said at all. In this episode, most of the time the atmosphere is just gloomy, since we are going to go through the dark route from the beginning of the anime. Okabe’s usual expressions back in the first season was not really being shown here.

Since it has been a really long time since I watched the original series, it’s quite confusing at first about what’s going on in this show. It might help if you to watch the first season or at least some recap about it first to quickly remember what events happened back then.

Frankly, I did think that Steins;Gate series can simply end as the way it did in the first season. But after watching this first episode while also remembering that the series is adapted from a visual novel, where the game can have multiple endings depending on the player’s decision, I began to think that another path of ending could probably be interesting as well.
