Synopsis

In the future, the world’s fish population has disappeared from the ocean. To overcome this, Japanese scientists created a technology to cultivate fish in outer space and eventually gave birth to a new profession, space fishermen! Now, Haru Soramachi, along with other girls who live in Onomichi, Hiroshima, tried their luck in the new profession.

To be frank, the reason I’m interested to watch this anime is actually quite simple. As a fisheries faculty graduate, I was immediately “hooked” when I read the synopsis. Fish population gone extinct? Fish cultivation in space? Just… how?

Aside from the “strange” premise, the fish catching of Sora to Umi no Aida feels like watching an animated version of a battle scene from mobile games, complete with the appearance of the boss who must be defeated by using a finisher skill from the side kick character. Here, you can also see the main character, Haru, appears like a novice player while the senior fishermen are treated like high-level players. This anime is, indeed, adapted from a cellphone game that has been released in Japan. On the other hand, Haru and other characters’ distinctive accent makes them feels cuter.

If you are still curious about Haru and her friends and why they choose to cultivate fish in space, it seems you have to wait for the next episode. We’ll see if this anime will offer something truly “unusual” or end up like any other “ordinary” mobile game anime adaptation.
