Fall 2018 Anime: Regarding Reincarnated to Slime

Synopsis

Satoru Mikami was a 37 years old office worker who was satisfied with his life, or at least that’s what he thought before he realized that he never had any girlfriend. One day, one of his juniors introduced his fiancee to Satoru. As a good senior, Satoru didn’t feel any jealousy towards his junior, instead he wished the best for that couple. When a robber armed with a knife ran towards Satoru’s junior, he quickly pulled away his junior to protect him. As Satoru died because the knife hit his vital organ, Satoru heard a weird voice in his head. He was then reincarnated in another world as a slime, the soft and weak monster that is always targeted by every novice adventurer in an RPG game.

As the title spells out, this anime features the now familiar theme of a person from modern Japan dying and then reincarnated in another world, though in this case, instead of reincarnated into a human being again, he got reincarnated into a slime monster. It also the first story with such theme to have been previously available in Indonesia through print media, as the manga has been released by Elex Media.

When compared to the first chapter of the manga, the first episode really adapts the beginning of the story nicely, especially the scene where Satoru is dying and starts to reincarnate as a dlime. In the comic, this scene is depicted with simple pitch black panels all over the page. But in the anime, this scene is depicted with some unique visual elements, ranging from some RPG-esque magic scripture to some psychedelic imagery. As is typical of this type of work, there are a lot of elements borrowed from RPG mechanics such as skills that dominates the exposition, which may be confusing for some viewers who don’t like fantasy and RPG. But the scenario of being reborn as a slime still makes it an interesting variety to this type of fantasy.
