Having moved back to Japan from abroad, Rinku Aimoto, a girl who has a habit of saying “happy around!” transfers to Yoba Academy where DJ-ing is popular. She is deeply moved by a DJ concert she sees there and decides to form her own DJ unit with Maho Akashi, Muni Ohnaruto and Rei Togetsu.

While interacting with other DJ units from her school, Yoba Academy, such as Peaky P-key and Photon Maiden, Rinku and her friends aim for the high stage!

Personally, I was hooked into D4DJ franchise as far back as when I discovered their live shows performing original songs and covers. I thought their songs are really good with variations from different kinds of DJ units. When the anime project, D4DJ First Mix, was announced, I was very excited about and really looking forward to it. With the game D4DJ Groovy Mix also released close in the same week, the anime got all hype it needs from the franchise’s fan.

Storywise, it’s very clear that the story will tell about the origin story of a DJ unit that would be formed around Rinku, the main character. The first episode already started to put the pieces on board by having Rinku smearing her trait all over the 24 minutes runtime of the episode. While it could become a good character introduction, Rinku’s character actually is very close to generic, especially if the viewer is already hooked on a certain Bushiroad franchise revolving around girls band. Despite that, I really love her positivity and energy that could affect other characters around her, thus, making the story starting to evolve, and ready for the next chapter. That energy also makes me geared up for the next episode to come.

Visually speaking, I would say that Sanzigen really improves their 3DCG animation technique over these years and made this anime very impressively. The 3DCG animation lifts the possibility for the new camera works of live performances and character movements, especially with Rinku being hyperactive all over the place. It is becoming another example of a very good 3DCG anime and I really hope that Sanzigen could hold their standard until the end.

The part that I really love about this anime is how it introduces a very basic DJ-ing knowledge which answers the question about what does a DJ do in performances. I really wish that they continue to give us bits of information about DJ-ing as this knowledge is really interesting and keeps my curiosity at bay thus, making me want to stick to this anime more than it already is.

Overall, D4DJ First Mix have a very huge potential that still could be developed. It’s still very early to decide but I am really looking forward to see what is next for the anime to come.
