Unlike other romance anime that usually focuses on teens, After the Rain focused on a relationship between a high school girl and a 45 years-old widower. While some the viewers definitely will find the premise unappealing, After the Rain‘s first episode is actually beautifully constructed. While there is age difference, and Masami is really described as a useless old man, it is easy to understand Akira’s point of view. Some of the visual gags also help this anime to feel lighthearted. The big age difference between two leads is definitely not everybody cup-of-tea, but the first episode successfully makes Akira’s one-sided crush feels cute and romantic.

In the end, love is an universal feeling. Anyone could fall in love with their best friend, an online avatar, or even someone who actually hurts them before. In After the Rain, Akira Tachibana chooses to falls in love with an older man who could have been her dad, and the staff at WIT Studio respects her by executing the first episode in the best way as they can. Interested? this anime is a must watch.
