Synopsis
From the outside, Kouta Hasegawa is just an ordinary high school student. However, he secretly likes a Sanrio character called Pompopurin. He always hides that fact because he feels shy of the fact that he likes a “girly” mascot. His life changes when he meets other male students who openly stated they love Sanrio.
Comments
For those who unfamiliar with Sanrio characters, Sanrio is a Japanese IP company that focuses on creating mascot characters. Some of their works are Hello Kitty, Jewelpet, My Melody, and Pompopurin, which is the focus of the first episode.
There is a thematic idea presented in the first episode of Sanrio Boys, which is about being honest with yourself. The first episode successfully introduce Kouta as relatable character. He likes a Sanrio character called Porin, and his fondness actually came from his deceased grandma. But unfortunately, he also feels insecure because he thinks Sanrio characters are too “girly” for a boy. However, that changed when he met Yuu, a popular student in his school, yet openly admitted that he likes Sanrio character My Melody.
Unfortunately, the animation is not that good. And Sanrio Boys could feel like it is targeted for female demographic because of the character design and some light fanservice scene (Kabedon!). But if you are looking for an anime about boys’ friendship with relatable main character, this anime is recommended.
