A spin-off of Cells at Work! Series, Cells at Work! CODE BLACK managed to catch my attention as the premise of an unhealthier body creates more possibilities for new stories to roll out with many other different sicknesses ready to be explained to the audience. As I love to learn more about how the cells are working in this new environment, I am very eager to see what is going on in this spin-off anime.
After watching the main story of Cells at Work! anime and directly continuing to this spin-off, I would say that this anime’s atmosphere is definitely 180 degrees away from its main story counterpart. Set in an older and sicker body than the main story, it certainly feels more dangerous and more brutal. Gone are all the happy and fun live in a healthy body, and welcome to a more unbearable work condition for the new Red Blood Cell to try to handle.
Visually, to further enhance the cruel atmosphere of a nearly broken body, the show makes use of darker colour scheme which really helps to create a sense of horror to the already dark setting. It also uses dynamic shading to intensify the dark atmosphere. They really perform a good job to bring out the dark theme in this series.
I could not help myself but feels a bit terrified with the horror and dark atmosphere, but it certainly makes me wanting more. It’s really interesting to see a different take of this biology series from a more happy-go-lucky one to a more sickly and sad one. Now, let’s enjoy our learning about the danger of having an unhealthy body while having ourselves on the edge of our seats, looking forward to what will happen to our new Red Blood Cell and White Blood Cell.
