If you were scrolling Twitter one day and wondered why there were suddenly so many images, parodies, and memes of what seems to be weird, vaguely guinea pig-like cars (?)  ranging from the adorable to the hilarious to the downright bizarre, then look no more!

Who would’ve thought that we would already have a surprise hit so early in the season, and that it would be this? Pui Pui Molcar is a stop-motion felt puppet short anime about sentient guinea pig cars that… also have actual people driving them inside, depicted using live-action images? It’s another series that fits into the “adorable, but weird” type of character shows that remind you of Oshiri Kajiri Mushi or Mameshiba. But mostly adorable!

If these fluffy cars look familiar to you, then it might be because you’ve seen one of the shows to feature similar stop-motion animation from recent years, such as Pop Team Epic or Rilakkuma and Kaoru. In fact some of the staff that have worked on those shows make up the staff of this one, like Hana Ono, one half of felt puppet animator team UchuPeople. You might be familiar from their work on the stop-motion segments of Pop Team Epic including “Let’s Pop Together”, as well as the ending sequence of Gal and Dinosaur.

Pui Pui Molcar is short, sweet, and if the description from the website is to believed, was voiced by actual guinea pigs. Turns out that after such an exhausting year, a silly little show about adorable sentient animal cars is just what we needed. More warm & fuzzy felt puppet anime like these, please!

Pui Pui Molcar is currently streaming on Muse Asia
