Synopsis
Aki Shiina, tired of being treated like a girl at her hometown, moved out to study at a middle school in Tokyo on his own to become more “manly.” Now living at Sunohara-sou, Aki spends his days with the kindhearted but mischievous caretaker Ayaka Sunohara, and his older female schoolmates.

Official description of the comics this anime is adapted from explicitly identify Sunohara-sou as “oneshota love comedy,” referring to the genre that features relationships between young boys (shota) and older females (onee-san). And indeed, Sunohara-sou surrounds its cute middle school freshman boy Aki with a variety of lovely older ladies. Remembering that the word “moe” is said to originate from the verb to bud or to sprout (萌える – moeru; see Galbraith, 2014), the feel of Aki’s interaction with the Sunohara-sou residents, especially with Ayaka, can be said to be budding. There’s a pleasant feel in seeing Aki, who aspires to be more mature but still has a lot of gaps, being propped up bit by bit by the care (even if mixed with teasings) of the older girls.
The voice acting is another essential part, with Eri Kitamura’s adorable Aki a character to dote and root for, while Rina Sato maxes out the gentleness for Ayaka. Pastel colours give the show a warm and welcoming feel while enhancing the characters’ cuteness. The show is sweet and fluffy, but also has an uplifting development to it.
