The game is the sequel to Coffee Talk, an interactive game series where players take on the role of a barista whose job is to serve coffee, as well as listen to the stories of their customers. Just like the first game, Coffee Talk Episode 2: Hibiscus & Butterfly features pixel graphics and classic anime-style coloring, combined with relaxing lo-fi hip-hop and jazz-style music.
Coffee Talk is set in a fictionalized version of Seattle, which is inhabited not only by humans but also by fantasy creatures like elves, succubuses, and aliens. Even so, life goes on normally, where all residents regardless of their kind mingle with each other while visiting coffee shops and sharing their stories. The first game received a positive reception, highly praised as a relaxing yet fun adventure game rich with human interaction. It was also included in The Guardian’s list of best 2020 video games, along with Resident Evil 3 and Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
